Workshops Numbers refer to booking references in the Programme Paula Meehan Workshops Monday 2nd July - Friday 6th July Burgage Hall 2.00pm - 4.00pm £15 per session (Beginners and experienced writers welcome) This workshop is a fantastic opportunity to study with Paula Meehan, one of our renowned poets in residence, and will use collective and individual exercises to explore the making of poems. The intention is to generate new writing and ideas about poetry in a supportive atmosphere and to ground theory in craft and practice. Poems and songs will be looked at as signposts to different paths. 61 Monday 2nd July Line and Breath 62 Tuesday 3rd July Stanzas: the rooms of the poem 63 Wednesday 4th July Persona: I and not I 64 Thursday 5th July Memory: Private and Communal 65 Friday 6th July Received Form, Organic Form: Walking the line 66 Theo Dorgan: One on Ones Monday 2nd July - Friday 6th July Festival Box Office 11.00am - 1.00pm £12.50 per half hour session Develop your poetry writing skills with an individual session with one of our internationally celebrated poets in residence. Theo Dorgan's extensive experience enables him to offer suggestions, precise observations and the right encouragement to develop your talent in new and positive ways. Participants should send three poems in advance to the Festival box office when booking these sessions. Advance booking essential. Please specify a day and time when booking. Tutor Joy Roderick Monday 2nd July - Thursday 5th July Burgage Hall 10.15am - 1pm £8 per session or £28 for all 4 What characteristics distinguish poetry from prose? How many different types of poetry are there? Why do we find some poems more pleasing than others? A close analysis of different forms of poetry will attempt answers to these questions. Joy Roderick, popular and knowledgeable tutor for the WEA leads these taster sessions. 67 Monday 2nd July Japanese miniature poems or haiku This first workshop will focus on traditional Japanese haiku. We shall study this ancient form, trying to establish why it has flourished, finding so many readers and imitators all over the world today. 68 Tuesday 3rd July Art for Art's Sake? Does the best work stem from an objective, non-judgemental stance? This was certainly the view of Oscar Wilde. The art for art's sake aesthetic will be explored by studying Wilde himself and some poems from TS Eliot: Prufrock and Other Observations. 69 Wednesday 4th July Poets take a stand A far-reaching change in poetics occurred when the commitment to art for art's sake was swept aside by the instrumentalism of the 1930s. In a period of increasing economic depression and growing fear of Fascism, poets decided to take a stand. 70 Thursday 5th July Seamus Heaney, the greatest living poet? Who is the greatest living poet writing in the English language? Some would choose Seamus Heaney. What kind of poetry does Heaney write and how has his work developed? This workshop will consider different stages in Heaney's career. 71 Open Mike Workshop with Brenda Read-Brown Thursday 5th July Burgage Hall 5.30pm - 7.30pm £5 Gain confidence in performing your poetry to an audience. This workshop will offer tips on bringing your work to life, with plenty of opportunities to practice and receive feedback in a friendly and supportive environment. Brenda Read-Brown teaches creative writing to people of all ages (3-97!), and has won two play-writing awards. Please bring two or three of your own poems along. Back to Top |
